Cherrywood is one of the largest and most exciting developments currently under design in Dublin and when realised will be a thriving suburban hub.

Niall Montgomery and partners have been appointed by Ronan Group Real Estate to provide landscape design proposals for the proposed student residences at Spencer Docks. In collaboration with Henry J Lyons Architects and Sutton Cronin Engineers, NMP have developed a landscape design which responds to a dynamic building programme and complex infrastructure. Proposals have been developed in line with the Vision + Ambition as detailed in the Public Realm Masterplan for the North Lotts + Grand Canal Dock SDZ Planning Scheme. The design draws on the Hard + Soft ‘Tool Boxes’ which endeavor to shape and integrate the spaces and connective tissue of the north lotts.

The design approach is driven by the need for defined but flexible space which provides a variety of programmatic uses including a space for respite, art, heritage, recreation all promoting health, biodiversity underpinned by sustainable principles.

The vison has emerged from the sites formative riverine landscape and celebrates its historical transformation as an industrial hub to its proposed future as residences.

In doing so a historical reference to the Earl of Spencer and His Great Great Grand-daughter Diana, has been drawn between the memorial in Hyde Park London and the design form developed throughout the open space.

Cherrywood Grand Parade

Running through the heart of Cherrywoods Town Centre, the grand parade seamlessly knits and links all the various landuses together. NMP have been engaged by multi national developer Hines to take forward the permitted planning scheme from detailed design to site implementation. A series of moments along this primary pedestrian route express the vibrancy of the street and its multi-faceted adjacent programme including Luas stops, seating, art and play opportunities creating a world class public realm.

Niall Montgomery + Partners top Irish winner at the prestigious Irish National War Memorial Gardens Commemorative Bridge International Design Competition. 

The firm was awarded second runner-up by Mr  Kevin Moran, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief at a ceremony on Tuesday 14th of May in Dublin Castle,.

The firm was the top Irish practice to be recognised at the awards, which had 61 entrants from 9 different countries.

Following the presentation, Managing Partner James Montgomery said that ‘NMP congratulate and thank the OPW, and the RIAI, for running such a visionary competition. NMPs Design Team were inspired by the brief and are delighted to have been the top placed Irish practice recognised amongst such prestigious local and international Architectural practices. ’

Niall Montgomery and partners have been appointed to provide landscape design proposals for the proposed development at Bailey Gibson lands.

In collaboration with Henry J Lyons Architects and BMCE, NMP have developed a landscape design which responds to a dynamic building programme. Proposals have been developed in line with the Vision + Ambition as detailed in the Framework Plan for SDRA 12 and the subsequent Masterplan. The design draws on Development Plan and related non-statutory plan objectives which endeavor to shape and integrate the spaces and connective tissue of the locality.

Niall Montgomery + Partners Landscape Architects were engaged to collaborate with Grid Architects to develop lands at Dundrum Village. Main Street, Dundrum Village. The development comprises 11no. urban blocks arranged around the central pedestrian spine and a series of 4 courtyards corresponding to 4 separate “zones” or character areas.

The development will consist of c. 881no. residential units, a food store, retail, café/restaurant and a crèche at ground floor level. The development will include the demolition of all existing structures on the site with the exception of No.’s 1-3 Glenville Terrace which will be refurbished.

Pedestrian connections and linkages are proposed through the site, forming connections that are not currently possible from within the site to Main Street; to the south via Church Square and Dom Marmion Bridge; and west via the proposed new Sweetmount Bridge connecting Main Street to the residential communities west of the Bypass.

The landscape masterplan strives to bring nature as closely as possible to the building, creating a sense of living with nature. a series of spaces are carved our below the transitional routes, creating stationary moment for programme, peace and tranquility. The design encourages social interactions in a bid to create a greater sense of community and appreciation of the outdoor environment. The public spaces open out onto main street as nodes and offer respite from the busy nature of the street without competing with it. The main street improvements tie in with the scheme so it reads as one cohesive place. Glenville Terrace Square + Usher Place have both been designed with reference to wind analysis. The spaces have been mitigated against wind impacts to create a human comfort for sitting and standing through tree planting and altering of levels.

Niall Montgomery + Partners Landscape Architects were engaged by the Client, St. Vincent's Hospital Fairview, to collaborate with Scott Tallon Walker Architects and Medical Architecture, as well as the wider design team, to provide landscape design proposals for the proposed development of the lands at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Richmond Road and Convent Avenue, Fairview, Dublin 3.

Niall Montgomery + Partners Landscape Architects were engaged by 1 Wyckham Land developments to collaborate with Scott Tallon Walker Architects to develop lands at Gort Mhuire, Dundrum.

The proposed development will consist of a ‘Build to Rent’ residential scheme comprising 628 no. apartments within 7 no. blocks ranging in height up to 9 storeys. The development will also include a creche, gym, and residential amenities areas, car, cycle and motorcycle parking. Vehicular connection via Wyckham Avenue and pedestrian/cyclist accesses. All associated site development works and services provisions including bin storage areas, substations/switch rooms, plant areas, open spaces, boundary treatments, landscaping and all services required to facilitate the proposed development.

The overarching landscape vision is an assembly of woodland characteristics. It explores the layers below the surface of the forest floor and celebrates the experience and relationship with the canopy above. It is a series of subterranean spaces bound by a graceful trail emerging as a memory of ‘forest dwellers’ in harmony with the movement of time. A place from which memories can be shared and preserved in a metamorphosis of community.

Niall Montgomery and partners were appointed by McCourt Investment Limited to provide landscape design proposals for the proposed new development in Kill, including the heritage train within the archaeological buffer zone.

In collaboration with JFOC Architects, NMP have developed a landscape design which responds to the proposed residential development layout , building programme and rich history of the surrounding area, including adjacent to the site Kill Hill.

Design proposals will aim to enhance the overall character of the site. Selected species are predominantly native trees and shrubs or suitable to the environment. The planting schedule includes many plants that attract pollinators in order to enhance the biodiversity of the site.

The design approach is driven by the need for defined space which provides a sufficient seating possibilities, play areas, bike parking and green spaces, creating a memorable space rooted in the site history.

The masterplan has evolved to protect and enhance the historic parkland landscape surrounding Kylemore House and retain as many existing trees as is possible whilst marrying this landscape with the more urban landscape character of the proposed development fronting onto Church Road.

The primary objectives of the design are to encourage biodiversity through varied tree and shrub planting, create a series of interlinking spaces which ‘blur’ the boundaries and create ‘moments’ for interactions crafting a sense and extension of the community for the wider Killiney area.

The Kylemore landscape design draws together a cohesive series of spaces driven by historical and ecological influences, experienced sequentially as routes of discovery and exploration weave themselves across the lands revealing a sensorium of spatial typologies.

Emerging from the suburban landscape of Blackrock, the proposed residential development on lands adjacent to Cluain Mhuire residential will embrace its existing character of historic trees and grasslands, it will reach out to and connect with the surrounding community. The proposed trees will become moments of happening at intersections with pedestrian routes, places to meet and interact with neighbours. It will be a landscape built around establishing and celebrating a biodiverse quilt of spaces. Welcoming nature to the benefit of its residents. The open space will be flexible in use and deeply rooted in its historic context.

The site formally occupied by Avid building is located in Sandyford Business Park, south of Dublin City.

The landscape design includes heavily planted green streetscape, maintaining and enhancing existing wildflower planting. A tiered pocket park provides an entrance to the central communal courtyard, with reflecting pool, natural play and tree planting. Communal roof gardens, with lawns, social spaces and urban farm allotments provide high quality outdoor amenity for residents.

Tree planting is proposed to harness the existing site characters and also to give a sense of identity to different zones of the development. By defining the predominance of a particular species, planting clusters are created to delimit spaces and support different activities throughout the site, such as walking routes, sitting areas, play, etc.

ES Shan Limited, are applying to An Bord Pleanála for permission for a strategic housing development at this site “Site to the south of Abingdon”, Shanganagh Road, Dublin 18.

Niall Montgomery and Partners were engaged alongside Henry J Lyons Architects by RGRE to develop a residential + hotel landscape masterplan in Co Wicklow. The design principles celebrated the challenging steeply sloping terrain, working with its natural form to create a series of garden landscape characters.

Embracing the opportunity to discover and explore the sites unique heritage and engage and enhance an already thriving community, the programme uses of spaces adjacent to a proposed hotel provided flexibility for woodland adventures, farmers markets, open air concerts, weddings and a variety of other events all managed carefully to positively impact the village context.

A sensitively integrated design providing a rural lifestyle and escape from the urban realm while restoring its historic formal and kitchen gardens to their previous glory…

Located at No’s 31-34 Abbey Street Upper, 42-51 Great Strand Street and Byrnes Lane, Dublin 1. The proposed residential buildings are arranged around a courtyard with extensive landscaping and tree planting proposed. Communal amenity spaces will be located within this courtyard and at roof level throughout the scheme. A large public plaza connects through the site to Byrne’s Lane from Great Strand Street.

The site, once formed part of the Liffey embankment and as such an extensive archaeological investigation uncovered historically significant stone elements in the ground which have been recorded and preserved where necessary. It is propose that these historical elements are referenced in the proposed landscape design.

The primary objectives of the design are to create a series of interlinking spaces which ‘blur’ the boundaries and create ‘moments’ for interactions. By proposing a green Plaza and elevated green Courtyard we are providing an oasis for the residents, community and for the wider Dublin neighborhood.

An innovative pedestrian orientated masterplan which aims to bleed into nature with a woodland eco buffer. A green spine runs through the heart of the plan with increased permeability throughout. Industry is pushed to the edge of the site, car parks are located behind the buildings surrounded by woodland as biodiversity takes priority over seas of tarmac car parks. Social spaces, parks, recreation, amenity and allotment gardens radiate from the center of the masterplan.

The landscape design has been planned in such a way so as to take full advantage of solar gain and breaking wind to create habitable, quality spaces. A number of potential routes through the site have been identified to help connect it with its surroundings and provide a better amenity for adjacent residential dwellings.

In addition, it is anticipated that the development will offer a net gain to biodiversity through the development of additional habitat connecting existing surrounding ecological stands.

An increased number of trees, areas for surface water treatment and wildflower meadows coupled with best practice maintenance will ensure a sustainable landscape for the future. Edge conditions and relationships with neighboring developments are also of interest to sensitively integrate and screen.

The primary objectives of the design are to encourage biodiversity through varied tree an shrub planting, create a series of interlinking spaces which ‘blur’ the boundaries and create ‘moments’ for interactions and create a sense of community in the neighborhood.

Phase 1 of a two-phased masterplan for a new urban village, ‘Kingston Cross,’ on lands zoned CI on the south side of the Western Distributor Road at Knocknacarra District Centre.

Phase 1, the subject of this application, is for a mixed-use development comprising a licensed supermarket; a retail warehouse unit; 9no. flexible shop/retail service units; 2no. flexible medical/community units; a café/restaurant unit, together with ancillary office use, entrance lobbies, lifts, travellators, trolley bays, a substation, a new pedestrian/cycle route, boundary treatments, landscaping, a central civic space including play and exercise areas and together with a covered sports court; a new access road off the Western Distributor Road, service access and signage, as well as ancillary development and all associated site development works.

An exciting new development on the boards in south County Dublin. This high end retail development is inspired by its approach to creating an authentic high street experience. By extracting key components of the street such as tree planting, defining the entrances to shops and edges to the carriageway using a variety of scale and tone in materiality, a simple but elegant design narrative can be expressed.

Integrating the public realm and creating a sense of arrival, ‘pause points’ and quality is critical in addressing development design language and tying it into it’s surroundings. Paving bands run across main open green area connecting entire estate into central garden with sunken garden and small plaza area for events and gatherings.

Open public space is divided into active and passive area. Active open space is relating to Devil’s Glen Park and Waterfall. Active programme includes play area and outdoor gym stations for active rest. Passive open space with ample lawn areas and lush planting is inspired by calming Mount Usher Gardens & Arboretum. Passive open area is perfect place for yoga, reading, picnics or mindful rest.

Main green area is connected by pocket green areas and avenue tree planting with open green spaces in adjacent development. Open green spaces will be planted with wildflower and herbaceous planting for year round interest and increased biodiversity.

NMP have been engaged by multi national developer Lioncor in collaboration with BKD and Taylor McCarney Architects to masterplan and design a residential landscape in the rural setting of Arklow. Inspired by the marsh lands to the north and historical ‘Pyramid’ memorial to the North, the landscape vision is informed by a transition in typology from formal to a more natural, reinforcing a diversity of character areas but knitting together the over all masterplan.

The design will cater for landscape programme’s such as health and wellbeing, children’s play and nature learning all celebrating a coming together of community with diverse opportunities for interactions.

Engaged under HKS Architects NMP collaboratively conceptualised the landscape design for this new urban quarter in Dubai. A series of spaces are carved out between and respond to buildings of various character and programme. The landscape provides shade and cooling, moments fro reflection and opportunities to gather, celebrate and engage with the wider community.

Saadiyat Island is a visionary project in Abu Dhabi. Upon completion it will have over a dozen high end resort hotels, a number of museums by renowned architects Zaha Hadid, , Jean Nouvel and Frank Gehry. The pristine beaches and dunes have been protected for turtle nesting and are well integrated with Gary Players beach golf course.

Wenying Lake was established following the implementation of planning procedures requiring a completed amenity to be established in advance of establishment of a resident population. The site of a former reservoir was selected to create habitat on a large scale, recreational facilities, bike routes, exercise trails and a live learning environment putting water at the centre of its legacy.

NMP were invited to collaborate with Ricardo Bofill Architects on Xiongan, a new city west of Beijing. Xiongan will be A Celebration of People and Place rooted in resilient systems. It is a city which will define itself by its ability to create and regenerate, evolve with time and change, shaping a place for people to live in closeness with the vibrance of nature and paint the colour on the canvas. Where landscape, ecology, architecture and infrastructure seamlessly intertwine to create a parkland city of people.
